The Production of N219 Aircraft Can Foster Economy

JAKARTA, KOMPAS — If there is no obstacle, N219 aircraft will do its inaugural flight in the end of March and it can be produced in 2018. The production of the aircraft made by Indonesian engineer is expected to grow the economy, support ancillary industry, and grow technology-based enterpreneurship. However, it is all need support from government.

The global trend of aerospace industry, including Airbus and Boeing, is to subcontract most of the work to ancillary industry around the world. The concept can be implemented by PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PT DI) when producing N219 aircraft.

“It is the concept of sharing the risk in order that the company is not overloaded, the works grow, and the labor can be managed” said Chairman of Indonesian Aeronautical Engineering Center (IAEC), Hari Tjahjono, in Jakarta, Monday (23/1).

Vice Chairman of Indonesia Aircraft and Component Manufacturer Association (Inacom), Adi Sasongko argues the same. It relies on PT DI with its large structural organization and work independently.

The work of aircraft manufacture that can be subcontracted to ancillary industry generally is not the core part of aircraft that can directly affect on the aircraft performance. The work is hindered from designing or developing aircraft design until producing components.

According to Hari, members of IAEC, consisting of 26 small-medium industries and 200 aerospace engineers in Indonesia and foreign countries can be enpowered for N219 development in various versions, such as for maritime patrol or combi aircraft. That’s all need recalculation by engineers outside PT DI in order that PT DI can focus on developing new aircraft generation.

“the small-medium industry of aerospace technology thrive in India and Singapore,” he said.

The manufacture of aircraft components that can be submitted to ancillary industry generally does not involve security and aircraft safety. For example the lighting panel system or a part of aircraft’s electronic systems.

“However, manufacturing aircraft’s electronic systems by ancillary industry is complicated because it must pass rigorous certification.” Adi said. The certification process make most ancillary industries are not ready to support PT DI.

Director of Engineering and Development at PT DI that also Chairman of Inacom, Andi Alisjahbana said that the involvment of Inacom members to supply some components, tools, and jigs is ongoing.

If government want to high-tech development that provides multi economic benefits for society and fosters enterpreneurship, it is necessary to involve small-medium ancillary industries. “It can not be instant, it should be prepared in clear road map”, he said. (MZW)
